Mark Buchanan Hunts Polar Bear
Mark Buchanan of Big Bore Productions has just returned from a Polar Bear and Muskox hunt in the far north of Canada with Fred Webb. After three days of nasty weather, being stuck in the tent with the wind howling outside, and joining his Inuit guides eating raw fish and raw caribou, the weather finally cleared and they were able to chase bears.
Bears are found by following tracks in most cases and on day four of the hunt, the first bear was spotted. Although not a shooter, he allowed the guides and Mark to get some great bear footage. The following day a second set of tracks was found and the hunt was on. The dogs eventually brought the hunters to the bear and were released to turn him.
Mark was shooting his 416 Rigby built by Ryan Breeding of Granite Mountain Arms and decided to take the bear with open sights. With a few tense moments for the guides (when they should have been filming) Mark got in close to the bear and had his trophy. This is Mark’s second white bear, and was not the monster he was hoping to find, but a great bear all the same. They celebrated in Inuit fashion with some boiled bear meat that evening.
After finishing up with the bears, Mark changed guides and locations and went in search of a Muskox. After a full day of busting through snow on snowmobile, they discovered one of the runners on the sled had broken off and ground the exposed wood into a polished stump. They called Fred for a replacement and after waiting another day due to weather, they were brought reinforcements, and soon found a herd of Muskox bulls. Mark shot a great bull and finished another great Artic hunt
Although the great white north is miserable cold this time of year, the northern lights can be amazing, and the adventure is as difficult as any other on the planet. The Inuit are a hardy group to be able to live out their lives under these conditions.

Jim Shockey Travels to Cameroon
Jim Shockey has been touring and hunting Africa for the last two months, his last stop being a jungle hunt in Cameroon. Some highlights of his trip are below:
My PH on this safari is Gauv Johnson who is 28 years old and hunts about 200 days per year. He comes from great blood, his dad is one of the best PH’s ever. Gauv might be the best hunter I’ve ever been around. Incredible the way that he stalks animals.
On the morning of the 21st I was answering nature’s call while the rest of the hunting party were keeping tabs on a herd of buffalo. If I wouldn’t have been busy in the bush, we probably would have already been in hot pursuit. But during the delay, the team spotted a second group of buffalo coming out of the tall grass, so we went after them instead, and it’s a great thing we did! The wind was perfect, we got around the buffalo, and when they came out the lead one was an absolute monster! The shot was 50 yards and perfect through both shoulders using the new (super-top-secret) custom solids from Nosler and 150 grains of my Jim Shockey’s Gold powder. The buffalo went only 50 yards and tipped over. Beautiful specimen; they are red-clay colored.
On March 21: I had what might be my most incredible hunting day ever in Africa. I took a West Africa Savanna buffalo, a red-flanked duiker and a sing-sing waterbuck … all of which will be new SCI muzzleloader world records! That’s right, three world records in one day. That is the best endorsement possible for this amazing hunting area. It’s absolutely fantastic.
Today, March 22 I shot a 16-foot giant python. It took three shots to kill the huge snake that’s almost as big around as Cody. Everybody was going crazy when this python came out of its lair. We’re filleting steaks off of it for dinner tonight and it had eggs inside, and we’re going to eat those, too!
In addition to the excitement of the python today, I took a Western roan that is sure to be the new SCI muzzleloader record. And I got a Nigerian Bohor reedbuck that will challenge the current world record. I don’t know if I’ve already said it or not, but this place, (all fair chase no high fences) is absolutely amazing!
March 24: Got what should be the SCI muzzleloader world record Western kob today, around a 19-incher. They're a beautiful orange animal that looks like an impala. A 110-yard shot. The kob had us pinned down for half an hour, I had sweat pouring off of me, I was crouched down, we couldn't breathe. Finally it gave us a shot, and it was a perfect, one-shot kill. We also went after two monster harnessed bushbuck, which is the prettiest of all the bushbuck species, both within 60 yards, but couldn't get a shot, we're going to try to get one that goes 12 inches, which would be the muzzleloader world record. They're an orange color with one white side stripe and spots all over the back, very pretty.
March 25: We succeeded in getting a Red River hog today, a hard animal to get. It should be the muzzleloader world record. Very red color, a nice boar. We saw a huge cobra today and colobus monkeys. And this place has more baboons than anywhere I've ever been. Temperatures in the shade are 112 degrees, and in the sun it was 125. You can't stand it in the sun, you'll boil like an egg. Apparently it gets even hotter here. Luckily, dust from the Sahara Desert blew in and obscured the sun, cooling it down a bit!
March 28: Good news! Today I took what I believe to be one of the most handsome animals to be found anywhere in the world ... a harnessed bushbuck! Mine is an old buck that will score close to the SCI muzzleloader world record; I was hoping for bigger, but he's a good representative animal for sure.
Exciting trip Jim, can’t wait to see the videos.
