Jim Shockey’s Cave Bears of the Pacific Rim

Cave Bears of the Pacific Rim is a hunting video dedicated to hunting the black bear.

Jim Shockey has an excellent concession on Vancouver Island where he hunts spot and stalk for black bears. Jim is not the hunter in this bear hunting video, but rather often the guide or the host. The bears on this island are obviously numerous and rarely pressured as Shockey follows the bears with his clients, often getting within 20 yards before deciding to take the bear.

You will notice in the film that Jim nearly always wears a black shirt, and they even employ a black umbrella during on of the stalks. Bears don’t have great eyesight, and the guides use this to their full advantage when stalking the bears. Jim’s clients take bears with archery equipment, lever action rifles, bolt action rifles and muzzleloaders, up close and personnal.

Shockey’s son bags his first big bear by crawling through the mud of the tidal flats with four record book bears to choose from. Eight hunts in total and all bears taken are giant coastal black bears.

Jim also offers some advice on judging bears and shows what happens when the guide and hunter don’t communicate. A hunter’s chance at a double, turns into a missed opportunity, when he shoots at the wrong bear.

You’ll see some interesting spot and stalk tactics including the use of a predator call. If you enjoy black bear hunting or are planning your first bear hunt, this is a great video to learn about bear hunting.
