Tips and Tactics
Whitetail Hunting
If you haven't tried calls on whitetail, it's time you gave it a try. Even in areas without a lot of cover, if your hunting near the peak of the rut, it's amazing how effective a call can be.
Try a doe bleat near the edge of a cornfield or better yet, smack some antlers together for a further reaching sound. Even those older bucks will occasionally get excited and move out of heavy cover.
Another great call to bring bucks your way is the grunt. It will bring bucks from a long ways if used in conjunction with a doe bleat. Just make sure you portray excitment in your calls like a rut crazed buck. Check out our Primos videos for some excellent calling footage.
Filming a Hunt
If you are interested in filming your first hunt, I can offer some advice to make the venture successful.
Always use a tripod. The farther away the animal, the more zoom you will use, and the more any small movement affects the quality of your footage. The tripod is the only real way to get quality video.
If you have the chance to film animals in their natural settings, film longer than what you feel you need. The more footage the better, as this allows you to pick the best video.
Elk Hunting
There is nothing more exciting than hunting big bull elk in the rut. When the bulls are screaming, they will occasionally make a mistake and come to your call.
Bring a friend and have him set up 100 yards or so behind you and away from the elk. Many elk will hold up at this range, and the only chance you'll have at a shoot is to be in this zone when they stop.
Specials
The holiday season is nearly upon us and we are offering a great Christmas special. Buy any four videos and receive a fifth video of equal or lesser value to your lowest price video for free. That's right, your fifth video is absolutely free. We are also placing "Death on the Gold Coast" on special at $25.95. Mark Buchanan takes all of the species of elk in one season. He also adds some huge mule deer all taken in the state of California. This is a great video with some great footage on the California Coast. Don't miss it!
Video Review
We spent the month of November in the field and didn't get a chance to preview any videos.
We hope to add several videos to the inventory in the next month or two. We are also planning to share a booth at the International Sportmen's Exposition in Phoenix in March of 2008. Look for us with the Arizona Chapter of Safari Club International. It should be a great show!
Another reason we have been so busy is we are starting a new website and are putting together content by the day. We are looking for great hunting stories with pictures, so send us the details of your latest trip. The website will be at www.dukatsjournal.com and it will be titled Dukat's Journal of Hunting. We will be filling the website with reviews, stories, videos and more so have a look.

Our hunting videos make great gifts or stocking stuffers and this month only, buy more than four videos and get the fifth free. See the details in the Specials Section. Order now to be sure they arrive by Christmas.
It has been a hunt filled month and we'll fill you in on some of the highlights.
November means our annual trip to Nebraska to hunt deer during the rut with a rifle. Last year, I had an excellent trip taking a great muley buck and a wide heavy whitetail. This year it was Susan who had the luck. We made it home the day before the season opened, but not early enough for any scouting. I got out early the next morning and found the corn still in the fields and the deer holed up inside.
I did see a few decent whitetail, but nothing too impressive. That evening was a similar story with very few sighting other than a small muley buck and does. Day two I headed to mule deer country and found a great buck with a herd of does. I got some great footage and decided to bring Susan down that evening.
We arrived a little late that evening and found another great deer, but it disappeared back into the hills as darkness fell. This was not the deer I filmed that morning, but from a distance looked wide and heavy. We arrived the following morning and soon found the buck I had filmed the previous morning. As I found the buck in the camera, Susan readied for the shot. She shot the deer at 150 yards on video and had killed the biggest mule deer in the family so far. He's a beautiful deer and will be hard to top.
I had to head back to work for a few days, so missed a valuable part of the season. I returned for the final two days.
The corn had been chopped while I was away and the deer had been stirred up to the max. The canyon I normally hunt was void of deer and it took me most of a morning to figure out where they had gone. I decided to head down into the sandhills again and look for the buck we'd seen the second night. He had a noticeable limp and would be easy to spot. We found a good herd of deer and a couple great prospects for the following year, but no limping buck. The final morning, I went in search of whitetail again and found a good buck in the canyon the deer had choosen as their new route. He wasn't the buck I was hoping to find, but a good whitetail all the same. Maybe next year will be my year!
Once again, we hope you enjoy the newsletter and come visit us at Hunting Videos Online.

Mark Buchanan Heads To South Dakota & Mexico
Mark Buchanan of Big Bore Productions spent late October hunting Pheasant in South Dakota. They had a great hunt with lots of birds and hunted over some great Vizsla pointers and Lab retrievers.
Mark then headed to Mexicali, old Mexico for another pheasant hunt.
Mark relates:
I just returned from the Pheaseant opener in Mexicali. The hunting was awesome, my shooting was off, so Gary and John were the "game hogs" for the weekend...Juan Saffon filmed, and supposedly caught all the action on video. I can always edit the misses!
Hard to beat a cackling pheasant exploding at your feet. Looks like fun Mark!

Jim and Hal Shockey Get Their Whitetail
Jim Shockey has a great area in Saskatchewan for whitetail deer. As many of you know, his father has become somewhat of a celebrity on his hunting show and in his hunting videos.
Jim and his father Hal get to spend some time hunting together every fall and take some great deer in the process. Jim relates: Two days ago, Dad, (better known as the famous Hal Shockey) ... the first deer that walked in for him, he shot it—a beautiful 5x5 buck. I kept telling him to keep his trigger finger off the trigger. We wanted him to turn down some of those good bucks saying that they were too chewy, but he wanted to shoot. He couldn't understand what the heck I was doing. So finally I just gave up and said go ahead and shoot him.
Good footage, two camera angles. It's great, so Dad's all done hunting.
Then I went out yesterday, and I'M DONE TOO! First time I've ever shot this early in the season, second day of the season for me, I still have two weeks left!
The buck goes 177 gross. He's a beautiful character buck 7x5. He's all bladed on the main beams and heavy, big, long tines that grow up inside the main beam, so he just looks great. Good shot, all on camera, coming right through the trees. As soon as I saw him I said "I'm shooting." I thought he'd go 180, so I missed by three inches. He's a beautiful buck.
The guys in the camps are doing good. They're all on deer, and we're starting to get a bunch of 150s and 160s now for the clients. They're all seeing a lot of deer, the rut is happening!
Saskatchewan is the best place on the planet to hunt big bucks, it just plain is.
I'll be here for at least another week hunting deer. Davey Lawless is coming in tomorrow to hunt, so I can run camera with him. We know a place where there's a net 175 typical hanging out, but I don't know if I'll take Davey there!!
Hope you enjoyed the November 2007 newsletter. We sure enjoyed reliving the hunts. We'd love to hear your comments at dukatsoutfitting@yahoo.com. See you in the field!
